I'm wondering how you actually get the money that you are raising? In other words, do you tell the people that are going to be in the walk that they have to donate to be in it, or do you somehow get sponsors? What's the best way to do it? I'm thinking about getting one together to support the skatepark that we are building in knoxville.

We were raising food for the Food Bank by saying bring two cans of food. When you are dealing with $$ you are crossing into a very sticky area. FIRST get some LEGAL advice on what you have to do to keep the naysayers and the IRS off you back. While you are raising money for noble cause if the money goes into your account/hands even though it is 100% for charity the IRS will call it INCOME and YOU will be responsible for TAXES.

I work for a non-profit organization in Denver, CO and was thinking an event like this could be great to help us raise money for our general administration costs. We are a 501c(3) and have no problem reporting funds raised to our accountants.

Any recommendations for yielding a high return?

My thought was to ask for donations from walkers, then link up with a local venue to host a "Zombie Dance Party" with a live band etc. and charge the door for entrance and tell folks it is for a non-profit.

Does anyone reading this have more insight for me that could help me raise somewhere in the neighborhood of 5K-10K? Perhaps for this event I should try to raise more like 1-5K?

We sell ad space in our zombie walk brochure.
We ask for donations from local businesses.
