Zombie Walk Atlanta(url for pics at the bottom)
Current mood: giddy
Category: Life On October 27th...I participated in an extraordinary Halloween Event that I can't wait to tell you about!! The First Annual Atlanta Zombie Walk!
This was probally one of the most AWESOME things I have ever seen! As someone who loves Halloween, I was pretty proud that someone created this event in the Atlanta area for I have always said that Halloween is a dying art in the South. I'm glad to see someone proving me wrong! Thank you. I didn't really know what to expect and I asked if it was alright if I just join in, sans make-up and observe and take photos on my own. I was not disappointed in the photo taking oppertunity...I went through two memory cards and 4 batteries before all was said and done! When I arrived at Lenny's Bar I felt REALLY under dressed and a wee bit out of place standing amongst The Zombies...it's not everyday you can say something like that! It took me a while to warm up to the others but I instantly came over my shyness when I noticed this goo on one of thier suits and had to ask what that was and did it stain?? No. It's called Gel-Effects and comes in Red, Clear and...some other color that escapes me at the moment and it will just dry and eventually peel off! Cool stuff! Must remember for future reference. I also found some new- less stinky ways of Zombifying a suit as well. I eventually got comfortable enough to start taking pictures and I found ALL of my subjects more than willing to Dead-It-Up for me!! There were some pretty cool, creative zombies and I have to give kudos to them for the spirit of the walk. That particular day was pretty MISERABLE......it was raining hard, and it was cold and windy and most of the Zombies didn't have sufficiant protection from the elelments, and it didn't stop them from walking and having fun. No Pun intended, but I hope no one 'caught thier death' out there. When the walk finally started, I was racing like a mad woman trying to keep ahead of the Zombies! MANY of them got into character and shuffled about with twisted, dragging feet, moaning in that desolute way that Zombies apparently do calling out for thier food of choice....."bbrraaiinnnnzzz..." I ran several times to the front of the procession trying to catch as much as I could as I let them just pass by only to have to run again, dodging traffic sometimes to get back up to the front. It was cool to pass by the King Memorial MARTA station and look at the expressions on peoples' faces..and this was ONLY the begining!! One woman said "oh! you need to come to my house and scare my Grandkids!" (I actually caught her on movie mode on my camera saying that!) The first official stop was at Atlanta's Historic Oakland Cemetary. You couldn't have asked forbetter Halloween Ambiance than to witness the living dead lumber into the old cemetary on such a perfectly misable day. The Zombies were pelted in hard rain and cold wind as they wandered about. Catching the images that I did, as imperfect as they are was the highlight my entire day. I just randomly shot footage and pics and hoped for the best! Next off they wandered off down the street through back streets of Atlanta where they (bravely) went into businesses ( I heard a LOT of screaming and I don't know if it was real or just *play* screaming but there was plently of it I tell you!) and approached cars with passengers and literally wandered in the middle of streets during pre-rush hour traffic! One of the Zombies (Maggot Face) had said he wandered out in the streets and saw this woman in her car make 'kissie faces' at him, so he staggered up and kissed her window and when he pulled away he left not only a bloody lip print on it, but his chin appliance peeled off of him and stuck to the window! GROSS!!!....lol
Eventually, we made it to the downtown Atlanta area, where people were just getting off work looking at the things before them....stunned classic looks on thier faces...the Zombies, stopped at traffic lights would just moan, call for brains and paw at the traffic before them until the light changed. Who says Zombies aren't safety conscience?Further up, we approached the back entrance to Underground Atlanta. Underground Atlanta is basically a glorified shopping mall with a lot of Georgia themed tourist type shops in the heart of downtown Atlanta. When I got down the steps to the entrance, I *realized* WHAT was about to happen and I ran into a side doorway to try to get into to position before it could happen! I had quickly noticed that they were stopped at the glass doors and were heavily pawing at them(what I would have given to catch a pic of that....but I wasn't fast enough!) and I got inside JUST in time to see the doors fly open and witness a MASS ENTRANCE of the living dead bust into the shopping center screaming "BRRAAIIIINNNZZZZ!!!!!!! BRRAAAAIINNNZZZZZZ!!!!! AAARRRGGHHH!!!" I was simply IN AWE at the sight!!!!!!! I FELT like I was in a George Romero movie!!!!I was able to catch footage of some of the Zombies pounding on the plate glass window to the Johnny Rocket's Restraunt and clumbsily rolling off the glass wall to the jaw-dropped expressionsof the restraunt employees and thier patrons and moving on down the aisle as we passed a street cart vendor who seemed to be a little emotionally scarred by the appearance of the living dead at her work place. Poor thing was hiding her face in her hands with her head in a corner, screaming a lung out! That was probally the only person that I felt sorry for during the whole event. But mostly people reacted in good spirited ways and didn't seem to try to hurt the people dressed as Zombies, but actually embraced it! The Procession ended back outside again and as the rest of the other Zombies caught up and 'fell in' with the others some one piped up and smartly said 'Should we get out of here before security comes after us??' After emotionally scarring some people, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea! So, off across the street we headed to the Five Points MARTA train station at the begining of rush hour! Zombies lined up at the ticket machines to buy thier Breeze cards to get into the station..and as we were waiting for everyone, a MARTA employee starts yelling at the group to either get on through the station, or get OUT of the station and yells at me "No picture taking in the station!"....too late! Already took about 15...but not of YOUR station. And it didn't stop me either. On down to the concourse the Zombies terrorized patrons and people again were good natured. This time....instead of calling for brains, it was "TTRRAAAIIINNNNZZZZ......TTRAAAIIINNNZZ..!" As you can imagine, this was definately a great day...and the event went off with out a hitch to my knowledge (except for the late start for people still having make-up applied) and it seemed to be very well planned and everyone had a great time! To the organizers of the Atlanta Horror Festival, thank you for starting this event....I hope your Festival (which the Zombie Walk kicked off) was a great success and I hope you will do this again next year. My hat is off to you!

Below is a url to a slide show of my pics from the walk. They're not perfect by a long shot but I

think they tell the story in images!
